Gary Klein Named John F. Parmer Award Recipient by SEAOI and the Structural Engineers Foundation
We are pleased to announce that Senior Principal Gary Klein has been named the recipient of the John F. Parmer Award, presented jointly by the Structural Engineers Association of Illinois (SEAOI) and the Structural Engineers Foundation. The award recognizes a structural engineer for outstanding lifelong contributions to the field, honoring an individual whose distinguished career is acknowledged by peers as an example of excellence.
Over four decades at WJE, Gary has investigated hundreds of deteriorated, distressed, and failed structures, building nationally recognized expertise in forensic engineering and structural behavior. His work on landmark collapse investigations, including the Kansas City Hyatt Regency, Koror-Babeldaob Bridge, and Champlain Towers, has directly altered engineering practice and improved public safety. Additionally, he led the 2006 Stem-to-Stern Safety Audit of Boston's Central Artery/Tunnel Project, managing a complex, high-stakes assignment and delivering critical findings on an accelerated schedule.
His contributions extend well beyond project work. Gary's role in developing and refining the shear and torsion equations in ACI 318 stands as a singular professional achievement, translating hard lessons from failures into lasting improvements in design standards. He has applied that same rigor to evaluating failures in solar power support structures and improving wind turbine generator footing design.
Across his career, Gary has served in leadership roles in SEAOI, ACI, ASCE, and PCI, shaping the profession through numerous research projects, publications, lectures, and mentorship of the next generation of engineers. His influence is further reflected in his election to the National Academy of Engineering and recognition as an Honorary Member of the American Concrete Institute, among numerous other honors.
Nearly two dozen WJErs were on hand at the June 4, 2026, SEAOI event to celebrate Gary in person, a fitting reflection of the impact he has had on the people around him.
Congratulations, Gary.
